A caliper or micrometer is needed when a regular ruler isn't precise enough, for example when making parts or doing repairs where accuracy down to hundredths of a millimeter matters. The range includes steel calipers accurate to 0.02 and 0.05 mm, plus a micrometer covering the 0–25 mm range.
